I often get very slow downloads from cache.nixos.org - e.g. right now it’s oscillating between 2MiB/s and 0.5MiB/s.
I’m in Swtizerland, my ISP is Init7, in case that happens to mean anything to anyone. I’ve had this issue on and off for quite a few months.
I found a few threads here and there of individuals complaining about it, but it doesn’t seem to be a major topic of discussion. This makes me suspect this is not affecting most of the community.
A comment in one of these threads suggested using the beta binary cache, and indeed as soon as I did that my download speeds jumped up to the limit of my cheap old WiFi network. (I haven’t done a scientific experiment so it is still possible that this was a coincidence as my download speed always varies a lot).
Now I’m wondering - is this because the beta binary cache is using fundamentally better technology, or is it just by chance that I’m dodging some accidental network pathology, and it will come back one day.
So… does anyone know anything about this? Is it a more common issue than I think and the solution is just to get more bandwidth for the caches? Or is there any common known issue affecting particular users?
