Chromium unstartable, hangs, on sway with nvidia

I’ve setup a new host, and Chromium won’t start and hangs forever, unkillable, with the following error message:

nvc0_screen_create:1154 - Error allocating PGRAPH context for M2MF: -110

My system has the following hardware:
CPU: 11th Gen Intel i7-11370H (8) @ 4.800GHz
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce MX450
GPU: Intel TigerLake-LP GT2 [Iris Xe Graphics]

Things I’ve tried so far:

Testing OpenGL with glxgears --info, works fine:

glxgears --info
Running synchronized to the vertical refresh. The framerate should be
approximately the same as the monitor refresh rate.

I’ve tried to disable the nvidia gpu completely like described in https://github.com/NixOS/nixos-hardware/blob/3006d2860a6ed5e01b0c3e7ffb730e9b293116e2/common/gpu/nvidia/disable.nix, but nouveau ist still loaded.

My full config is under https://github.com/katexochen/nixos/tree/nostro/debug-chrome and the host is called nostro.

Thanks for helping!

Hmm, that’s the nvidia GPU, right? The udev rule should have removed that, so it should not be present. Any output from journalctl --boot --unit systemd-udevd? Would be good to double check its attributes with udevadm info too to make sure the rule matches.

Hyprland has some useful info on making nvidia actually work with the proprietary driver (including a nix-packaged patched version of wlroots, which might make sway work better too), if you’d like to try that as well: Nvidia | Hyprland Wiki

Thanks for your answer. You’re right, the firefox output was before the try to disable. Firefox currently prints:

[GFX1-]: glxtest: VA-API test failed: failed to initialise VAAPI connection.

The journalctl output don’t seem to be helpful, either:

I’m not sure what I’m supposed to check with udevadm info, could you elaborate that a bit?

To be honest, I’m not sure if I want to invest in getting the Nvidia thing running, I’d be very happy with disabling it fully and being able to run chromium.

Nothing at all, I just figured the udev rule wasn’t working since Firefox was still picking up the GPU. Clearly it’s working now so that’s pointless.

I don’t understand how chromium could possibly identify your device as having an nvidia GPU at this point, it shouldn’t even show up in lspci, and nouveau is blacklisted.

Have you tried cleaning up chromium’s cache just in case there’s some graphics cache messing with it?

I cleaned the cache with the following command, didn’t help.

rm -rf .cache/chromium .cache/mesa_shader_cache/ .config/chromium/

However, the two pci devices from the first firefox output do show up using lspci:

I guess deactivating things didn’t succeed. :confused:

Hrm, well that’s odd. I also wonder how come Firefox no longer detects it in that case. Maybe once again caching?

Can you check /etc/udev/rules.d/99-local.rules on the running system to see if your udev rules are actually in there? The logs don’t show any failures, so aiui the GPU should only show up in pciutils if the rules aren’t actually running.

You can also try to forcibly run the rules with udevadm trigger while the system is running to see if anything happens.

I’ve cleaned the firefox cache, didn’t change the output:

❯ rm -rf ~/.mozilla ~/.cache/mozilla
❯ firefox
[GFX1-]: glxtest: VA-API test failed: failed to initialise VAAPI connection.

/etc/udev/rules.d/99-local.rules doesn’t contain the rules I’ve tried to add:

cat /etc/udev/rules.d/99-local.rules
❯ cat /etc/udev/rules.d/99-local.rules
# Don't manage interfaces created by nixos-container.
ENV{INTERFACE}=="v[eb]-*", ENV{NM_UNMANAGED}="1"

SUBSYSTEM=="misc", KERNEL=="sgx_enclave",   SYMLINK+="sgx/enclave"
SUBSYSTEM=="misc", KERNEL=="sgx_provision", SYMLINK+="sgx/provision"

I triggered the rules manually

udevadm trigger
❯ udevadm trigger --action=add -s=pci -a=vendor=0x10de -a=class=0x0c0330 -a=power/control=auto -a=remove=1
❯ udevadm trigger --action=add -s=pci -a=vendor=0x10de -a=class=0x0c8000 -a=power/control=auto -a=remove=1

❯ udevadm trigger --action=add -s=pci -a=vendor=0x10de -a=class="0x03[0-9]*" -a=power/control=auto -a=remove=1

The Nvidia device is still there

I also tried to trigger the last rule with the actual class instead of the regexp, no effect:

❯ udevadm trigger --action=add -s=pci -a=vendor=0x10de -a=class=0x0302 -a=power/control=auto -a=remove=1

Ack, looks like for whatever reason your config isn’t actually applied then. Is it because you use lib.mkDefault? Use lib.mkForce if they still don’t show up after you remove that.

Not quite, you’ve told the kernel to pretend that a device with the same properties as your GPU was added (and with the remove property set? x)). Since you have no udev rules to actually do anything when that action happens it didn’t actually do anything.

That’s it! Thanks!! :blush:

Chromium now starts as expected and device isn’t listed with lspci.

Interesting! I’d wager the upstream module will fail to work on a lot of systems as well then. Time for a bug report.
