On the nixos wiki:
but dnsmasq is also installable as a service:
services.dnsmasq.enable= true;
Will dnsmasq installed as service work also?
Or, the better question is: Why is dnsmasq not set as a dependency when installing virt-manager? Isn’t networking extremely important?
dnsmasq isn’t required for like bridge networking. But yea both ways work because the service definition will add the package to your system.
so the reason why dnsmasq is not installed automatically (as dependency) when install virt-manager, is because it isn’t actually important or even needed?
Dnsmaq is needed for what you want, but it’s not like mandatory for the package to work. I feel like you are right it should be included, possibly best to open a PR.
i don’t know how to open a pr for this. can you do it please thanks.
virt-manager is just a graphical interface for managing libvirt. It’s libvirt that needs the dnsmasq service enabled, not virt-manager. When you enable libvirt on nixos via the virtualisation.libvirtd.enabled option, dnsmasq is pulled and started, as a dependency.
- virt-manager can also manage:
Remote libvirt sessions over ssh via qemu+ssh://user@hostname
- Local, non daemonized vm’s that use userspace networking (slirp) instead of dnsmasq, via
qemu:///session
So, dnsmasq isn’t strictly needed in order for virt manager to work.
so instruction in the nixos wiki is not needed?
A lot of stuff on the wiki is outdated unfortunately.
