Why does the nixos store not keep track of whether a package might be left in an incomplete state because of FS issues, spurious reboots, etc.?

Nix store, not NixOS store.

You can manually run a store repair this time.

Specifically: sudo nix-store --repair --verify --check-contents If that doesn’t work, boot live iso, mount everything relative to /mnt, empty out /mnt/nix, reinstall.

For future maybe look at these options (that have a significant perf impact): nix.conf - Nix 2.34.8 Reference Manual. Or look into a UPS.

Usually we don’t care about broken store since it’s easy to repair the store or even wipe it entirely and reinstall.

For the ESP, I suggest making it 500 MB or larger. Avoid automatic upgrades for the sake of your sanity.

For your “why” questions, it usually comes down to no one cared enough about the problem to fix it. The graphical installer in particular has been pretty neglected. If you’re interested, feel free to contribute fixes to nixpkgs.
