Why wouldn’t it allow that? It seems it was only introduced into the NixOS infra this year (fastly: implement "Lockable HTTP Tarball Protocol" (Flakes) for channels.nixos.org by emilylange · Pull Request #562 · NixOS/infra · GitHub), so that’s why no one suggested it yet.
