Thanks to our mentors, candidates, and various people who have provided input to the process, we have been assigned 4 out of 5 slots by Google for NixOS Foundation’s participation in Google Summer of Code 2026! 🎉

Welcome and congratulations to all the GSoC contributors! It’s great to have you here.
I’m particularly curious about the “NixOS Vars” project. Does anyone have a link to the original proposal or more details? I couldn’t find it in the [GSoC repository](https://github.com/NixOS/GSoC).

The goal of the vars proposal is to have a generic backend-agnostic solution for secret deployment _and_ generation (example usecases include the user password, host ssh keys, etc).
Existing work includes:
- [Clan’s vars](https://clan.lol/blog/vars/) (the idea stemmed from here)
- [Agenix rekey](https://github.com/oddlama/agenix-rekey) (agenix specific implementation)
- [The old nixpkgs vars PR](https://github.com/NixOS/nixpkgs/pull/370444) (the first proposal of adding this to NixOS)
- [Vars-ng](https://github.com/kmein/vars-ng/) (the most recent manifestation of the proposal AFAIK?)
- The various frameworks for secret deployment (but not generation): agenix, sops-nix, etc
- The various proposals for the contract API (way more general than vars)
