Install Nix on Debian: stack smashing detected: terminated

An attempted single-user install failed with a stack smashing error. A multiuser install seemed to finish without errors, but trying to run this command, I get the stack smashing error. Is there a workaround?

Install command

curl -L https://nixos.org/nix/install | sh -s -- --daemon

Test command

❯ nix-shell -p nix-info --run "nix-info -m"

Another test:
