Is it necessary to fight?

I just wanted to quote this because I haven’t seen it explained so beautifully and succintly anywhere else.

OK, I guess I misunderstood what you meant. I didn’t realize that you can get “fringe and legacy” so fast. You can have that opinion, of course :person_shrugging:

If you want less conflict in the community, starting meta discussions about the conflict isn’t helping.

The general concept is called pluralism.

There are some results, like standards, that intrinsically must be a consensus, as in a decision derived from multiple authorities and interests reduced to a single decisive output.

For many things, no fundamental need for consensus exists. Alternative Nix implementations, up to the CLI they expose and their interpretation of Nix expressions, can do whatever they want with no consequences.

If some in Nix want to wear inflatable costumes and twerk in front an an Anduril tent at Nix con while protesting war in general, as long as those interested can still get to the tent, aren’t we accommodating the most interests?

Pluralism is a very strong concept for open organizations, where we expect those with interest alignment to freely come and go and just not interfere with each other’s interests. It is one of the core principles of PrizeForge. The creation of some boundaries is necessary to protect independence. There must be consensus mechanisms for things that fundamentally can’t be independent without consequence. It’s entirely workable, and an example of an opportunity to imagine and innovate.
