Is matrix invite only?

hello,

i tried to join the nix/nixos support channel,
but was denied due to not being invited.

is matrix invite only?

if it is not rude to ask,
then what would be the process to ask for an invitation?

if it is not open to the public,
then no big deal to me.

We have been hit with no-so-nice imagery these last few days, so the room is invite only (you can knock with a client that supports that, not element though)

Please join #matrix-discussions:nixos.org and ask for an invite.
