Kindle not seen by file chooser in plasma

I’m trying to access my Kindle with calibre, but when I try to add books, the kindle doesn’t appear on the list of directories/devices in the add files dialog. If I open dolphin, it shows the Kindle as a device and I can browse directories.

I know it has something to do with the mtp connection. The Official Wiki isn’t very useful. The first suggestion is to use jmtpfs, but this is apparently unmaintained. The second, to enable gvfs, did not change the situation. The manual method using gio also failed (volume doesn’t implement mount). Users from other distros seem to have disabled a gnome mtp volume monitor which isn’t running on my system. If I try to configure automount in system settings, I cannot make any changes and no devices appear.

I would appreciate any ideas about this. Thanks.

I loaded Gnome, and had no problem opening the directory on the kindle. I guess plasma is a little behind on this. As a side note, I haven’t used Gnome for a while, but it does look better, and, more importantly, it alerted me to a firmware update for my laptop, and allowed my to install it easily. Plasma never gave me any such notification. I’m still a plasma guy, but it’s nice to see the competition doing well, too.
