NCA member & jonringer joint announcement

You should check the definition of muckrake, “lying” isn’t part of it.

Disappointed at this situation again. I’ve been more active in NixOS than ever, but with jon back, I might be stepping back again. His actions over the last several months have caused many people I know, personally and not, to remove themselves from the community altogether, and it seems that the NCA is not addressing or is unwilling to recognize that.

Further, this feels like it’s glossed over many of the finer, and sharper points about this, such as Jon not disclosing active conflicts of interest during sponsorship discussions, and simply(in my eyes) being given far to many chances. I do not wish personally to see him back in the community, and I hope the NCA understands the damage they’re doing by not just letting him back into the community, but giving him a direct line to the assembly, which no one who was driven out by his behavior has the privilege of.

no idea what you’re talking about. you don’t seem to be aware of what muckraking means and have read it however you want, so have at it i guess, I am not interested in these silly games.

To clarify: This is not coming from the NCA or the mod team, Jon continues to be banned from official community spaces.

then the title of the reddit post is extremely misleading. you and jon are moving forward, and that’s great for you two personally. but the implications from that post are not helpful to the community at large.

If it’s not coming from the NCA, why is jon being given a direct communications line to an NCA member, and in this post, you also discuss what the NCA should have done, which as an NCA member, could be taken as an official statement?

Also this post is literally titled “NCA & jonringer Joint Announcement”, so you hopefully understand why I thought it was from the NCA itself.

the reddit post is titled “moving forward together” and the discourse post is the title you mentioned, which was posted by @delroth and does not seem to be accurate either.

I’m not looking for anyone to take it seriously, just stating my position and feelings on the matter. Whether you believe it is up to you.

Too many chances to apologize for his behavior, to acknowledge his repeated driving out of other community members, to understand the damage that his behavior has done to the community.

I wouldn’t say it’s presumptive, considering the many community members that have left explicitly stating that they were diaappointed with him and situations surrounding him.

I think reconciliation is a good way forward. And even though this might undoubtedly take time, I would certainly hope that Jon Ringer’s ban gets reconsidered in the process.

I thought much of this could have been avoided had an appropriate process been in place to regain the commit rights after the temporary ban.

Could anyone at least change the title to reflect what’s actually going on?

I’ve edited the title to make it 100% accurate.

“relentless pursuit for moderation accountability and related issues” is a real head scratcher here… is that what happened?

Speaking from my biased position as a moderator during that time, and not talking exclusively about Jonringer here, personally I’d characterize most of the discussions as “an attack on the operation of the moderation team under the pretense of ‘accountability’ to get some buddies unbanned”. Yes the moderation team had and has some accountability issues, but except for one single actually productive discussion, none of this was about actual accountability, and all I heard was “we want Srid unbanned”. See also RFC 175 btw, exactly the same thing.

Because it adds nothing to the discussion and sows division in the community.

How many times is Jon going to suspended or banned then somehow be welcomed again with open arms? Why is this a party worthy of weekly consultation on creating foundational governance structures and reworking community spaces?

It is becoming increasingly difficult to see the constitutional assembly as anything other than a farce.

So it was all just about ethics in nixos journalism then? And really there are very fine people on both sides?

@Infinisil, How is it possible that we are learning about these issues on Reddit, a platform that is quite controversial and barely moderated? How is it possible that such a statement is made unilaterally on Reddit? Can anyone explain what is happening? Seriously?

Are these decisions being made without community input? Where is the open and transparent process that involves the community? Is your goal to frustrate contributors to the point where they leave the community? Are you even aware of what is right and wrong? Are you the right person at the right spot in the NCA?

I’m so deeply disappointed by you and by your actions. You have missed a significant opportunity to positively impact the Nix community. I regret to say this, but you should step down from the constitutional assembly and allow someone else to take over.

I… don’t have the words or the emotional ability to process some of these bits today, thanks to other things going on in life. But I am closing this thread before it devolves further.

As an NCA member, I did not know about this before it was public, and do not agree with its content. As a moderator, I’m not letting Nix spaces continue to be a debate club.
