Nix for Novice for Fediverse questions

Hello,

Outside of some simple website stuff and a raspberry pi kiosk system running wordpress I have never really setup a linux system.

I am interested in setting up a suite of fediverse enabled applications for my community, starting with Gancio and probably moving on to add potential Friendica, Pixelfed and / or Mastodon instances.

Since I’m starting with Gancio, I have the option to set up using Debian or Nix (or technical Docker or Yunohost, but I’ve ruled them out).

I am curious of a couple things:

How steep is the learning curve for a novice to use Nix for this project? I like the portability of being able to replicate what is created easily, and Nix just seems neat / has good vibes.

[Nevermind, I found the wiki listing hosts] Does anyone have any good, reputable hosting services that specialize in Nix to recommend?

I am happy with any and all thoughts!

Thanks!

If you can find all of the services you want to deploy among the NixOS options, this is a great way to introduce yourself to Nix!

If not, but the software itself is in Nixpkgs, this is a challenging way to dive into the advanced topic of manually configuring software on Nix!

If the software hasn’t even been packaged yet, and you aren’t on any sort of time constraint and enjoy learning about big new systems by doing, you are in for a wild but rewarding ride learning about the core functionality of Nix!

Thanks! That’s a helpful calibration!
