river-classic + kitty + waybar + tofi. I tried Sway but River really offers exactly the automatic tiling and window nav I want. I was an xmonad user before switching to wayland so I’ve always been in the minority for window management.
Niri + DankMaterialShell + Ghostty
Once Quickshell releases a new stable version, allowing DMS to handle idle lock/suspend, this setup will basically cover all of my needs.
sway(Tabbed Layout) + kitty + waybar + fuzzel here.
I’m currently on Niri + DankMaterialShell + Alacritty. Niri looks like a keeper, Alacritty more or less also, Quickshell too. DankMaterialShell is impressively featureful but has a CADT feel to it, so I plan to try something else (is Noctalia looking any better CADT-wise?) once Quickshell finally makes an official release that includes idle handling (I draw a firm line at rolling my own desktop shell out of Waybar and all that. Lines, got to have some)
niri + ignis+ ghostty + fuzzel
same but foot instead as the terminal emulator.
kitty had some really strange behavior last time I tried it.
@waffle8946 I’ll probably switch back to Foot. I don’t need Kitty themes anymore.
Does the Fira Code font work in Foot?
My ricing has been essentially Gnome + PaperWM. It has everything I have needed so far, it can be installed with one click, giving me and ergonomic and beautiful GUI, and I don’t need to customized manually to have a starting good experience.
DankMaterialShell seems pretty interesting though. I’ll recommend it to some students, if they want to do experiments with the interface in our computer lab, as I don’t have the time to do it myself.
I use as greeter greetd, as Desktopmanager KDE plasma 6, as terminal emulator wezterm, Thunderbird for e-mail and Firefox as browser.
I’m not using full NixOS at the moment, but i do install most things on my system with nix + home manager. I have most of the tiling compositors configured; DWL, Hyprland, MangoWC, Niri, Qtile-wayland, River, and SwayFX. I also tried a compositor called MWC, but i haven’t been able to get it to build properly for a while now (i think it’s coming from NUR if i’m not mistaken). I find myself using River the most. It’s nice and minimal and just does the job. as for terminal, i have all three that you mentioned installed. The plan was to just stick to one but i’ve had issues with all three of them, so i use them all depending on usecase. Alacritty is nice and fast but doesn’t have image support, which i use for yazi, so i use foot for that, but foot is wayland-only, so i still have kitty installed in case i need to use xorg (hasn’t really happened yet though). I use Waybar for all compositors except Qtile, since it uses it’s own bar and third party bars honestly don’t play nice with it. My configs are fairly simple and don’t do anything fancy, but i just wrote them mostly from scratch with the example configs guiding me. For my launcher i use Fuzzel. I used Tofi at first but it had some issues rendering on Smithay (which is what niri uses), so i switched to Fuzzel and had no issues since.
river-classic + waybar + foot + fzf & foot as a custom launcher and power menu. Currently I set up a new laptop with niri instead and switching to hjem and wrappers instead of HM.
