No sound on Headphone Pipewire

hello

Out of nowhere my headset (wireless) is not showing in pavucontrol as an output anymore.
Befor that I had the issue that i could only have it as input or output (not both at the same time) but now suddenly i can only use it as an input.
However my Speakers work fine.
I even tested the headset on my laptop with nixos and the same audio configuration and there it worked.
I have absolutly no idea why it does that.

Pipewire setup as following:

  hardware.pulseaudio.enable = false;
  security.rtkit.enable = true;
  services.pipewire = {
    enable = true;
    alsa.enable = true;
    alsa.support32Bit = true;
    pulse.enable = true;
    # If you want to use JACK applications, uncomment this
    #jack.enable = true;

    # use the example session manager (no others are packaged yet so this is enabled by default,
    # no need to redefine it in your config for now)
    #media-session.enable = true;
  };

nixos: NixOS 25.05.20241229.88195a9 (Warbler) x86_64
pipewire: Compiled with libpipewire 1.2.7
Linked with libpipewire 1.2.7

So a quick update
The option for output is there again. After i left and shut the PC down it “spawned” again.
But unfortunately i still can´t define it as input and output at the same time.

After further investigating the issue (I only could use it as input after reboot) i found out that if I
plug the USB Wireless connector in after the startup I can define it as input or output.
Unfortunately still not as both at the same time

I notice you are using nixOS 25.05, so i’d assume you are also using nixos unstable pkgs.
I was too, had to roll back after a recent channel update completely borked mine as well. Granted mine is an integrated BT chip not a usb plug, but it still registers to the OS and dmesg as a USB device tho so i think it still applies here. This may be the issue you are having.

Does it work if you roll back the channel update?

But the problem that I can only configure it as an input or an output existed before the update.

Fair.

When you say input and output, does this headset have a built in mic?

What’s the model and name of the BT adapter you are using and the headset you are wirelessly connecting?
Also, if your cool with it, dump your dmesg logs, and the last 5,000 lines of your journal to text files and post them here so I can take a look at how it’s talking to system

So I have an roccat elo 7.1 Air which has a build in mic.
The headset does not use Bluetooth.
The Wireless Dongle of the Headset is plugged into a USB 3 Port.

journalctl:

dmesg

Alright, im seeing stuff in the logs i need some context for.

The dmesg logs and journal both say that the device driver is registered as an input,hidraw9 device but doesnt mention an output device.
Although it does see it as a ‘Headphone’ HID device which is strange.

More thoroughly explain the expected behavior and the actual behavior.
You mentioned pavucontrol, but do you see it as an input and output device only in pavu control? Or could you set the device as an input output in say discord?
EDIT:
Also, when you tested on your other machine, did you use the native BT interface, or the usb dock you are using on this machine?

So expected Behavior:
when using my headset i should be getting audio output to the headset and I should get an input from the headset Mic.

actual Behavior:
I can only get audio to the headset or get an input from the headset mic.

in pavucontrol:

I can set it as an output (as in this picture ) or an input. But not as both like the other one on top. This Option in the dropdown Menu does not exist (could not take a screen shot of the drop down Menu because it closes it self when doing so).
In Discord I can set it as an output when i set it in Pavucontrol as an output. But not as an input in Discord.
Also the other way around.

The Wireless adapter is directly plugged into my mainboard.
The Other Machine is a laptop. There I also used pavucontrol with the exact same configuration as on my PC.

Under the profile section, is there an option to set it analogue stereo duplex? or is that option not present at all?

So no there is not such an option.

There are some lines that are interesting.

Jan 08 18:13:12 nixos xserver-wrapper[1904]: (II) event8  - Turtle Beach Elo 7.1 Air: device is a keyboard

For some reason its categorized as a keyboard, that is fascinating in a morbid way.

Also, you seem to be having bandwidth limitations over the USB bus, which doesnt make sense if it is indeed plugged into a USB 3 port like you mentioned AND works with a copy paste setup elsewhere.
Although looking at the product specs, it does mention using BT for communication and BT is known for serious bandwidth limitations.
My own BT headphones in fact have the exact same bandwidth problems, it WILL NOT carry a voice signal while delivering audio at 44100hz or 48000hz.
When the mic is activated by any program, It forcefully sets the mode of the headset to ‘handset’ mode which restricts bitrate from 48/44.1khz down to 16khz to make room for the input signal going out from the mic to the PC. I solved for this by simply disabling those functions in pipewire plumbing directly so the handset driver wouldnt get called, which effectively disabled the mic permanently.

This is not your desired outcome, though it does kinda explain why its complaining about bandwidth, it may be trying to load a driver that calls for more bitrate than the bus can handle and it forcefully kicks it out of that mode.

This seems to suggest to me that pipewire isnt loading the correct drivers for proper functionality.

Hmm.

Dump your entire /etc/nixos/configuration.nix file, i need to make some edits to the wireplumbing to see if we can add that functionality back given the bandwidth really shouldnt be a problem

so here is my the audio part of my configuration. The whole would be a bit to long.

{config,pkgs,lib,inputs,...}:
{

  hardware.pulseaudio.enable = false;
  security.rtkit.enable = true;
  services.pipewire = {
    enable = true;
    alsa.enable = true;
    alsa.support32Bit = true;
    pulse.enable = true;

    # If you want to use JACK applications, uncomment this
    #jack.enable = true;

    # use the example session manager (no others are packaged yet so this is enabled by default,
    # no need to redefine it in your config for now)
    #media-session.enable = true;
  };
}

But oddly the Headset worked fine before that. It just suddenly did this after I booted up Windows (i did not turn the headset on while being in Windows, but the adapter was plugged in) and rebootet to Linux

That is actually really good context to have, it confirms my modesetting theory actually.

Give me a few to tinker with this a bit

I have some udev rules in my configuration:

  services.udev.extraRules = ''
    ATTR{idVendor}=="046d", ATTR{idProduct}=="c267", RUN+="${pkgs.usb-modeswitch}/bin/usb_modeswitch -v 046d -p  c267 -M 30f8090701010000 -m 03 -r 03"  # udev rule for logitech g923 so it switches from PS Mode to PC mode
  '';
  services.udev.packages = [
      (pkgs.writeTextFile {
        name = "50-oculus.rules";
        text = ''
          SUBSYSTEM="usb", ATTR{idVendor}=="2833", ATTR{idProduct}=="0186", MODE="0660" group="plugdev", symlink+="ocuquest%n"
        '';
        destination = "/etc/udev/rules.d/50-oculus.rules";
      } )
      (pkgs.writeTextFile {
        name = "52-android.rules";
        text = ''
          SUBSYSTEM=="usb", ATTR{idVendor}=="2833", ATTR{idProduct}=="0186", MODE="0666", OWNER=matt;
        '';
        destination = "/etc/udev/rules.d/52-android.rules";
      })
    ];

however the first one is for my wheel and the second for my vr headset

i love this snip, it is beautiful. Im going to save that

Question, is it possible to pair these headphones directly or do you have to pair through USB?

So I can only pair them trough the usb wireless adapter.
When they are attached to the pc directly trough a usb cable, i can only charge them or (in windows) update them.
