i found two desktop manager is default. Can I adjust that number? Can it be one? Thanks.

The “desktop manager” is where you log in, the screenshot though seems to show “Gnome” which is a Desktop Environment.
In the particular case it seems to be in an overview mode showing 2 seperate “virtual desktops” or “workspaces”, not sure which nomenclature Gnome actually uses.
As far as I remember those are generated dynamically, and you will always have exactly one empty desktop.
In the moment you move an applications window to the empty desktop, a new empty one will be created.

You can change the number of workspaces by opening the Settings app, clicking the Multitasking pane, and choosing the number under “Fixed number of workspaces”.
