That IS how a sponsorship works. In exchange for money, they get publicly listed among the other sponsors, tacitly endorsing them. In fact, even if we wouldn’t list them, it still reflects on us that we’d be willing to do business with a company like Anduril, even if it’s just taking the money that’s offered. Business doesn’t just happen in a vacuum, no matter how hard one tries to frame it as “apolitical.”
When the issue with the Anduril sponsorship came around, a lot of people on this forum, myself included, made it clear we don’t want to align ourselves with a company whose business model revolves around turning civilians in the middle east into corpses.
Tying back into the original topic of this thread, you can probably imagine why some people are also having a negative reaction to the idea of offering first-party support for an Arch config vibecoded by a guy who makes blog posts supporting a prominent British neo-nazi and comparing Romani people to invasive wolves.
Very true that, and I recall this conversation happening many times. It is rather a stretch to somehow connect this to Omarchy.
We should absolutely let it break. There has been about zero innovation in the Nix* space in years, and this is one of the reasons.
I’m sorry, but this needs to be clarified, because people use the word “team” too much lately: we’ve got a build server for Gaetan and Yuriy, who recently enlisted on the “team” among some others (e.g. prusnak, who keeps contributing, just doesn’t participate in the weekly meetings), to attach to the CUDA CI. It’s a compromise, and I personally still hold that this is net harmful to the project, and that the correct thing to do is to abstain from such asks and such offers until circumstances improve.
Skill issue on the part of the companies?
Clearly not nearly strong enough, judging by how we’re been handling the emergence of the “big cheese”, meaning a handful of Very Big companies most of our key contributors are recently employed by, on the public scene even over the past year. If we had the anti-bodies, and if we were truly afraid, we would start coordinating to act ourselves as a ruthless for-profit actor, which is the only way (besides immediate dispersal, caravans and all) to maintain integrity and not kill all innovation, creativity, and inspiration, when suddenly faced with someone several orders of magnitude larger than yourself. We, however, amazed at being graced with attention of such deities, started rushing to get jobs and hourly rates with our benefactors, grinding to accommodate them at their every request, such as with the microgrant system and the fiscal host arrangements, granting our employers non-competition promises even when not contractually obliged, and, generally, showing ourselves all the more happy to serve, and not for a margin. Because Lordly attention is its own reward.
This is very, very false in the context of NixOS, and painfully so. A very dangerous piece of misinformaiton, sorry, Tom. It’s obviously true sometimes, at some scales, but this has absolutely nothing to do with NixOS.
This is completely and entirely a Foundation thing, and a self-imposed one. We have repeatedly warned that it will be extremely harmful to push this through the Foundation, and, generally, to force through the borderline-legal “fiscal host” (aka Trust) framework. This was designed to fail, and it was done so on, like, one player’s whim, and we just have to wait for this to be over and free up space.
OK, this needs to be said: the microgrant system proposal is a great examplification of why the Foundation keeps failing and harming the project, and why we are very clearly not sufficiently afraid of the corporate world. Cf. the review (somebody accidentally marked as “resolved”).
Congratulations! It has. It has gone mainstream, and there’s nothing now that you or I, or anyone can do to change this. We can all leave tomorrow, and both of the A-corps, and the other corps, they’ll all stick to the Nix model. Sure there’s still a bunch of rough edges, which is why even the corps hide Nix very deep in the stack, but those will get smoothed without need for any creativity, and without tapping one bit into Nix(pkgs)’ actual potential. Can even have a clanker army do the bulk of the work. Ingest the full snix history, and see the ten years-old ideas to “completion”. There’s probably someone doing this right now, and just for a single person’s payroll! We’re on a rail, and all tracks end in mainstream Nix (the model) now. This wasn’t necessarily the case three years ago. Even two years ago, maybe. It absolutely is now. But speeding to get more mainstream sooner, I’m pretty sure we’re very quickly shrinking the potential. Now, if mainstream is inevitable, how’d you feel shifting focus to where our input still matters?
