The UTAX printers drivers are not (yet) in the NIX store. So the normal installation trough CUPS is not trivial.

> ⚠ Read it completely before starting the procedure.

## #1 Install CUPS

Make sure CUPS is [installed](https://wiki.nixos.org/wiki/Printing) correctly.

## #2 Install the Kyocera drivers

Create a **printers.nix** with this content

```nix
{ config, pkgs, ... }:
{
  environment.systemPackages = with pkgs; [
    # Kyocera filters for UTAX 3207ci
    cups-kyocera-3500-4500
  ];
}
```

The only package needed for my installation is **cups-kyocera-3500-4500** , but you can install other packages to configure other UTAX printers.

The insecure package is required from 2 packages: **cups-kyodialog** and **cups-kyocera**.

Here the printers.nix with the other packages:

```nix
{ config, pkgs, ... }:
{
  environment.systemPackages = with pkgs; [
    # Kyocera / UTAX
    #cups-kyodialog # ⚠️ Fails the checksum; need the insecure package.
    cups-kyocera # ⚠️ Need the insecure package.
    cups-kyocera-3500-4500
    cups-kyocera-ecosys-m552x-p502x
  ];
  nixpkgs.config.permittedInsecurePackages = [
    "python3.13-pypdf3-1.0.6"
  ];
}
```

Then rebuild:

```bash
sudo nixos-rebuild switch
```

## #3 Get the PPD

Download the drivers for your printers from the official UTAX website.

Unpack the DEB or RPM package to get the PPD file.

As described [here](https://wiki.nixos.org/wiki/Printing#Manually_supplying_printer_driver), you must edit FHS paths in the PPD.

I will show below what I changed in my PPD

The line starting with **\*cupsPreFilter** , and the line starting with **\*cupsFilter** , are at the beginning of the file, approximately line 47.

The original content:

```auto
*cupsPreFilter: "application/pdf 0 kyofilter_pre_H"
*cupsFilter: "application/vnd.cups-postscript 0 /usr/lib/cups/filter/kyofilter_H"
```

The customized content:

```auto
*cupsPreFilter: "application/pdf 0 /run/current-system/sw/lib/cups/filter/kyofilter_pre_H"
*cupsFilter: "application/vnd.cups-postscript 0 /run/current-system/sw/lib/cups/filter/kyofilter_H"
```

## #4 Install the printer

1. Open the [CUPS page](http://localhost:631) and click con the top menu “Administration”
2. Click the button “Add Printer”
3. Click on “Internet Printing Protocol (http)“ because the default link can’t reach the printer
4. On “connection” write the printer IP like this: **socket://192.168.1.22** ; Click con “Continue”
5. You must enter name, description and location: you can write without worry. Click con “Continue”
6. Take the edited PPD file and click on “Add Printer”

## #5 Enjoy the silence (of the errors)

Now your NixOS can talk with your Kyocera UTAX 3207ci.

I would like this guide to be useful for other UTAX printers as well.

I don’t have this printer, but I do have one without NixOS drivers as well. I was lucky enough to find a GitHub repo with a guide on how to add it inside my `configuration.nix` and pull the official binary with automatic unpacking, as defined in `default.nix` (which honestly doesn’t look too complicated):

> <https://github.com/fnltochka/xprinter-cups-nix/blob/50bf5205ffb70c659df2b004aad3eefac6e4aefa/default.nix>

If you or anybody else is interested in giving that printer at least unofficial support for personal use (just like that person did), you can write down what PPD files you need to take out of the DEB (and probably what modifications to do, as you mentioned) and then write your own `default.nix` based on the one I linked.
I don’t know if my post is useful at all, but I like resolving a problem once and then only applying the “patch” I made, instead of messing with that stuff every time I reinstall or whatever the big change I do. IMO it’s not worth the time 💀

I don’t yet have the experience to make installation easier for NixOS, but every contribution is certainly a step towards simplifying installation 👍

The common goal of printer manufacturers is to simplify installation via IPP Everywhere ™ technology. So these problems will disappear.
