There are a lot of Doom packages. Which one do you recommend please?

I personally use dsda-doom as my preferred doom source port, due to it being vanilla compatible while having some extra features. If you prefer to have more advanced features, you might want to look at uzdoom (which is a fork of the popular gzdoom).

My approach is unconventional. I like to enable nix-ld and envfs and spam popular GUI apps’ buildInputs and steam-run’s binaries to their paths. Then I usually download debian’s chocolate-doom tarball and use it directly and save it to my user path.
This is a Windows-like way of thinking. I don’t like using Nix to manage my games
