From one old IRC conversation ending in banningg as a troll a user who was absolutely sincere (but indeed lacking the basic background) I suspect there were two steps: the people who had a plan abandoned the effort for whatever reasons, then the rest concluded that the task is essentially impossible for them.

I suppose this project of an easily manageable configuration, nix-gui, if it succeeds (as I hope it does), could go a long way in making NixOS more manageable for newbies…

That makes me think of vscode settings for that hybrid approach of a settings.json + being able to change via a UI.
