I merged an improvement to nixos-rebuild just now, which will print commands executed by nixos-rebuild if any verbose flag is passed, in addition to forwarding the verbose flag to nixpkgs.
We tested it for some common use-cases, but might have missed something, so please test if you have any advanced nixos-rebuild use-cases.
