Feature request: Display Nixpkgs revs for prior package versions · Issue #636 · NixOS/nixos-search · GitHub
- @zmitchell: had some back-and-forth; is it even a good idea?
- If you need a specific version, you can use overlays, overrides, etc, there’s a useful comment on that
- We should put documentation for this somewhere. Should be able to find specific GitHub revision somehow.
- How do we indicate in search results that you can’t just pin this specific version?
-
@pennae: we could have some like the arch rollback machine. for us: a search engine for package name + version to “how to use this exact version in an overlay”
- search.nixos.org itself is too prominent a place for this
- @fricklerhandwerk: Next steps? Could somebody create a how-to guide for this?
-
@zmitchell: Still not sure if a good idea, but could write something about it
- will open an issue to track that idea
-
@pennae: Would like like to get the
nix-render-doc
examples thing done- Got a review, not sure about requiring compatibility between nrd html rendering and docbook html rendering
- somewhat needed for “proper” examples in commonmark-rendered Nixpkgs manual (nixdoc-generated function docs)
-
@henrik-ch and @infinisil: Can continue with A guide for nix repl · Issue #441 · NixOS/nix.dev · GitHub and nix repl command completeness · Issue #7956 · NixOS/nix · GitHub
- @gabriel439: Also interested
-
@fricklerhandwerk: Could look at Bash, Nix and mkDerivation tutorial by zombiezen by henrik-ch · Pull Request #480 · NixOS/nix.dev · GitHub together, should have an owner (not me)
- @khaled: Also interested
- Find maintainer for NixOS manual · Issue #217858 · NixOS/nixpkgs · GitHub
-
@zmitchell: Is this board the right solution? Seems pretty hard to find stuff. Things tend to get lost.
- @fricklerhandwerk: We should make some decision, probably next time
- @khaled: Want to review stuff

- conclusion: this is not a tutorial, but explanation
- closed in favor of compiling a survey first
-
@khaled: what is supposed to happen to the Nix Pills?
- @zmitchell: long-term ideally incorporate them into other resources
-
@fricklerhandwerk: actionable next steps?
- opened add an explanation resource by fricklerhandwerk · Pull Request #30 · NixOS/nix-book · GitHub
-
@zmitchell: find overlap between documentation sources
-
@fricklerhandwerk shared local version of documentation survey for further processing
- more up-to-date than what’s published, needs cleanup
-
@fricklerhandwerk shared local version of documentation survey for further processing
- should we shift focus to what to do with Nix Pills and how to integrate materials?
-
@khaled: what are the priorities?
-
@zmitchell:
- table of contents for the entire documentation ecosystem
- compiling materials and filling gaps (depends on throughput)
-
@fricklerhandwerk: the survey can and should be continued independently
- it’s very helpful in identifying what people struggle with and where the gaps are
- Nix language tutorial was developed that way, worked very well
