The new year is upon us and the Steering Committee has started to receive proposals for NixCon 2026 locations. In the spirit of ensuring everyone has a chance, this post is to ask the community to submit proposals for NixCon. This is relatively free-form this year; feel free to submit in what form you have, including relevant information, people organizing, locations proposed, schedules, etc.
We expect the process to include discussion and follow-ups. Please provide proposals ( GitHub · Where software is built ) quickly so that people can begin planning as soon as possible, submit deposits, etc.
I would really appreciate it, if we could come back to an affordable place. Paris and Zurich is out of pocket money for many people that are not being sponsored by their employer.
There’s also Planet Nix, I’m not sure how much of a benefit there’d be to have Planet Nix & a US NixCon. Also, NixCon itself feels more like a fit for the European region since a lot of contributors are from that region of the world.
I think @RossComputerGuy has hit it on the head–having two superregional conferences makes a lot of sense (and hopefully a third someday for our colleagues in Asia!).
Maybe we could just get more sponsor money and help high contributing people with travel budgets etc… Or also having sponsor taking up such things maybe, then the location would not be such a problem. Rapperswil CH Nixco 25 was awesome and nice but I heard that for a lot of people it was expensive, but nevertheless I think travel costs by plane are the most costs and for somebody overseas its always a problem to come and afford it. But what is affordable in your case or what should the average travel and accomodation costs be?
Absolutely loved going to Rapperswil in 2025! But keeping Nixcon in a variety of places allows the most people to attend eventually. I think sponsoring high profile contributors is a great idea if there’s money for it. But there’s also folks like me who are neither employer sponsored nor important contributors. I’m personally in a position where I can pay for Switzerland out of pocket, but not everyone is. I don’t even think we need to always pick affordable places either, just let’s not pick expensive places multiple years in a row.
USA is definitely out of the question, and I say this as a US resident. I also agree that different cons by continent makes sense, but I’m not opposed to having nixcon outside of europe either if there’s enough interest.
I think Glasgow has a pretty big FP scene so it might be easier to get collaboration with local volunteers and universities there.
I think it’s worth pointing out that anything in the UK often requires additional visa work ($$$ + time) for a lot of people, esp eu-residents who are not eu-citizens.
Update from Steering Committee. We have selected the Poland proposal (NixCon 2026 venue proposal: Kraków, Poland · Issue #6 · nixcon/nixcon-proposals · GitHub). The facility looks great and the cost savings is quite attractive. Discussion details will be in the upcoming SC meeting notes, but I’d like to congratulate the proposed organizers and wish everyone a great time.
Thank you to all the proposals. We have had discussion around supporting more than one NixCon, so if this is of interest, please discuss and propose things.
