October was my favorite month this year, coming back with an insane amount of energy from Berlin <3.
Wanted to announce the first annual Planet Nix event.
This two-day, two-track unofficial conference for Nix users, developers, and community members will be hosted by Flox and friends.
We are building an event with something for those of all skill levels. You don’t have to be a wizard to teach at Planet Nix, and you don’t have to be a newbie to learn! Nix doesn’t have to be your job, but Nix doesn’t have to not be your job. We are all in this together, we love what you do, and we hope to see you there.
The Flox team is going to cover all costs, removing the necessity for sponsors. However, we still feel that it’s important to welcome those who work on Nix products and services. We believe they have a lot to teach (and learn!) about Nix too, and we’ll be offering available demo space to those who apply and a few partnership opportunities. We’ll have more details soon.
It’s going to be in Pasadena, California on March 6th-7th in the same location as last year’s NixCon US. We’re co-locating with the outstanding SCALE event, so stick around and attend them both! There will be two separate tracks across two days. We hope to see you there!
There’s mandatory karaoke
If you want to help out, partner, get a table to showcase your awesome Nix project, have questions, suggestions just ping me or the team! <3
This is exciting. Already have a couple ideas for talks.
Also have to mention that SNUG always runs really fun events in the LA area (shoutout to the one this weekend that a bunch of us will be at: https://socal-nug.com/events/2024-11-02/). Something to check out if you ever find yourselves in SoCal!
I don’t think there will be a NixCon NA. Given previous Nixcon was cohosted at SCALE and Nix Planet is hosted at SCALE this is the same event as last year but with a new name.
Similar to what @arianvp mentioned, this will be an unofficial event and making space for an official NixCon to happen so unsure of timelines for that. There were a few discussions about NixCon outside of Europe during the week in Berlin. I believe there was some initial chatter on thinking how to bring the official event out to more locations or moving it around different locations.
I will be making speaker gifts (Nix Brix!) like the ones from NixCon US and Darmstadt. But they’ll be even better this time - been tinkering with a new form factor and finishing process.
Just in case anyone is thinking “hmmm should I submit a talk?”
If someone wants to organize a NixCon somewhere outside of Berlin, please speak up in Thoughts about the future of NixCon. We are looking for volunteers or location ideas, if no one feels like doing it, we would do another round in Berlin
