Summer of Nix returns for its 5th edition - a paid contribution program advancing the Next Generation Internet and the Nix ecosystem. Over 13 weeks, selected participants will work with a mentor on getting more free and open source software to work reliably on NixOS.
We’re looking for curious, motivated individuals with programming skills, familiarity with Nix, and a willingness to learn in a collaborative environment.
Participants will receive a stipend for their work. Our mentors - @erictapen, @eljamm, and @JulienMalka - will ensure smooth onboarding, share their experience, and help your efforts lead to real-world impact.
Requirements
fluency in English
proficiency with plain text editing, Git, and Bash
competence with the Nix language and related tools
availability for ~160 hours over 13 weeks from June to September 2025
Application
We warmly welcome applicants from all backgrounds.
You can get in touch on Matrix here: https://matrix.to/#/#ngipkgs:matrix.org This is not only Summer of Nix, but there is not a lot of traffic, and everyone involved can be reached there.
Hi @debaa, yes — this is not a program for absolute beginners, but an opportunity for growing your skills in a professional setting given some prior experience. We prefer candidates who have already contributed to the Nix ecosystem, but this is not a strict requirement if you know your ways around related activities.
The application phase has closed. We got more than 50 submissions from all over the world. There are so many amazing candidates that it will be a really hard choice for the team, as we unfortunately can’t accommodate everyone we’d wish to. Thank you very much to everyone who applied! We’ll contact you regarding next steps in the coming days.
We have concluded the application phase last week, and mentors have selected this year’s participants. More details: 2025-06-04 Nix@NGI team update
Thank you very much for every single one of you who applied, it was such a pleasure seeing so many enthusiastic, talented people and what they’re up to. I can tell you, selecting participants is not a decision the mentors made lightly. And thus, the careful but focused process was also a great achievement for the existing team – very well done!
