Auto-add to input group?

I understand that input devices are under /dev/input and they are owned by the input group. My user is not in the input group, and my mouse works under wayland.

However, I can’t run libinput debug-events without root, which makes me wonder if this is something I’m supposed to be able to do? I did some searching and apparently being an input group user is a thing.

I also understand that something (systemd or other) can assign the input group on GUI login. I can’t find such a configuration option.

So my question is two-fold: do I need to be in the input group, and how do I configure the system so that whoever logs in on the physical machine is added to input while they’re logged in?
