I’ve opened constitution: add referendums by philiptaron · Pull Request #299 · NixOS/org · GitHub, which adds a Referendums subsection to the SC decision process.
- A simple majority of the SC can put a non-binding (advisory) vote to the community; a supermajority can put a binding one.
- Eligibility follows the existing vote eligibility rules, and the Election Committee administers the vote.
- The question and options must be published at least four weeks before voting opens, and a binding referendum must state its passing threshold.
- Once a binding referendum passes, overturning it takes an extraordinary decision of the SC in its first year, and an ordinary decision after that.
The SC voted to adopt this text at its 2026-10-21 meeting: 5 in favour, none against, 2 absent.
It’s open here for one week of community feedback, and the SC will reassess at its 2026-10-28 meeting.
Suggestions welcome on the PR.
