CPU Core 1 90% usage on idle

After a fresh NixOS 24.11 install, Core 1 shows constant 90% CPU usage despite no visible process in htop.

  • ACPI (IRQ 9) flooding Core 1
  • i915 interrupts also disproportionately targeting Core 1
  • Issue persists across KDE Plasma 6 and Hyprland

I managed to narrow it down to these interrupts. Mind that I am not a veteran nor anything like that. I figured it out by “guessing what could be next”, no user processes were the cause (by htop and kde system monitor), no kworker being weird on htop too:

Then I tried watch -n 1 "grep -E '^cpu1' /proc/stat" which showed a bizarre number of IRQs on core 1.

in htop you can press K to see kernel threads. The fact that the cpu meter is red indicates it’s a kernel thread that hogs you cpu.

[SOLVED] Sorry for the late reply, I forgot to keep updating the post.
After switching distros and kernel versions I discovered that the problem was firmware related. I had to boot windows to install it due to Lenovo’s lacking linux support. But after the BIOS update the CPU problem was gone.

Lenovo’s whatnow? They’re one of the few companies that support complete firmware upgrades with fwupdmgr to my knowledge, what model are you using?

Hello, that is a cool software that I was not aware of!

My model the ideapad S145 laptop, and when I searched something along of “lenovo firmware update ideapad S145” I was taken to the official website page that had a section on linux users, I followed it throughly until I reached my model’s drivers page and it only provided windows executables. I thought that was the only recommended/official way to do it - on windows, since the first page mentioned:

Lenovo System Update is for Windows 10, 11 systems.

But I guess that was an oversight on my part.
Anyway, thanks for mentioning that tool, I’ll read up on it.
