Discord cannot play video

I don’t know when but my Discord can no longer play video. They’re all black screen now.

Discord version: 1.0.155
nixpkgs: e8be7818e19ada32105a8af937a6a473b38167ca

I don’t think nixpkgs ffbc9f8cbaac has Discord 1.0.155. It seems like Discord 0.0.119 for linux anyways.

Also nixpkgs ffbc9f8cbaac is from January; are you sure that’s right?

Oh yep. My bad. Nixpkgs should be e8be7818e19ada32105a8af937a6a473b38167ca

when I use that nixpkgs hash, I get /nix/store/8ql5hngjpy8w02df1hg67vjvcvw8688z-discord-1.0.155/bin/discord and it seems to play videos for me.

My system is otherwise on 26.11pre1051473.2fcb964de67f i.e. revision 2fcb964de67f.

Stack is wayland + hyprland. Nvidia drivers version 595.91.07.

Since discord is working otherwise fine for me on the above hash, I’m wondering if you have a video decoding issue from something else – are videos playing fine in other applications for you?

Mine is also wayland + hyprland. Nvida drivers version 595.91.07.
Videos in other apps are all playing just fine. I’m only having this issue with discord.

I tried turning off hardware acceleration and now the video are playing. If I enable it they stopped working again. Apparently audio is working in both cases. (I just saw the audio was muted, the video control is not rendering when hardware acceleration is on)

Issue still persisted

Yep hardware acceleration works here too. My guess again is that it’s related to your nvidia setup somehow. I’m including my nvidia.nix below in case it helps; I can’t really help you debug whatever you have going on with nixos-hardware.

{
  config,
  lib,
  pkgs,
  ...
}:

{
  services.xserver.videoDrivers = [ "nvidia" ];

  hardware = {
    graphics.enable = true;
    nvidia = {
      modesetting.enable = true;
      powerManagement.enable = true;
      powerManagement.finegrained = false;
      open = true;
      nvidiaSettings = true;
      package = config.boot.kernelPackages.nvidiaPackages.production;
    };
  };

  nixpkgs.config.cudaSupport = true;
}

If this was working for you before, then if I was in your position I’d probably do a git bisect on my config to figure out where the behavior changed, or just accept non-accelerated video is discord. I’m not sure what it really adds from a practical standpoint.
