Election Committee for the Steering Committee Election 2025

With the first Steering Committee (SC) election having concluded in November 2024, it’s soon time for the next one this year.

As such, we are looking for 3 volunteers for this years Election Committee (EC), who will be in charge of running the election. If you’re interested, please read on!

Responsibilities and Authority

The EC’s authority is based on the the Nix governance constitution, which all EC members should be familiar with. Notably the EC members cannot themselves be a candidate for the election.

Within the constraints of constitution, the EC is authoritative over how to implement the election, such as:

  • Determining details of the election (timeline, candidacy process, voting platform)
  • Making judgments (voter exceptions, conflicts of interest, certifying the result)

The EC has responsibilities such as:

  • Adhering to the constitution (voter and candidate eligibility, voting scheme, conflicts of interest considerations)
  • Community communication (announcements, informing voters, responding to requests)

While the EC is free to innovate within these constraints, for efficiency sake we recommended re-using as much from the previous election as possible. The previous EC has written down extensive documentation on how they ran the election, and some members (@infinisil, @edef, @7c6f434c, @endocrimes, @sarahnovotny) are also available for advice.

Based on the previous election, we are appointing positions with individual responsibilities:

  • Administrator: Manage accounts and permissions, keep track of the current status, tasks and timeline, ensure progress
  • Representative: Receive requests and forward/respond to them, write and publish announcements and documentation.
  • Developer: Write and maintain code and automation to support the election.

Application

To apply for the EC, leave a reply in this thread with the following info:

If you have concerns about an applicant, please reach out to the SC privately instead of replying in this thread.

Applications close at 2025-07-08T11:59:59Z, after which the SC will appoint the EC according to the constitution, which by default requires a 2/3 supermajority (5 members) of the SC to agree on the EC composition.

Hello, I volunteer as tribute.

I am able to take any one of these positions:

  • Administrator
  • Representative
  • Developer

My community positions and involvement:

  • active contributor to Nixpkgs and the Haskell infrastructure
  • one of the main organisers of NixCon 2025

My motivation and why I’m a good fit:

  • In preparation for NixCon 2025, I’ve written some tooling (with input from @infinisil and other organisers) for NixCon, which is similar to some of the tooling we might need in the election: GitHub - nixcon/nixcon-vouchers: 🦥 lazy reproducible vouchers
  • I wish to do what I can to help make the election as smooth and fair as possible, and for the community to stay strong and welcoming in the coming years
  • I wish to learn about the inner workings of our organisation and share whatever knowledge I have

  • Potential conflicts of interest: formally, the entire France academia. No paid Nix work, Nix use in research mostly stays in background.

I am able to take any one of these positions:

  • Administrator
  • Representative
  • Developer

My community positions and involvement:

  • Longterm Nixpkgs committer, RFC author (some accepted), RFC shepherd, appointed as NCA member

My motivation and why I’m a good fit:

  • Motivation: I want the timeline to work as planned. Probably not the best fit but a known quantity. Was in NCA-turned-EC, have seen the problems with some of our choices. A few of those problems were with my wrong guesses last time, though. Not too bad at keeping track of what’s pending.

Will be even more happy to talk to a fully-fresh EC from outside to share our NCA-as-EC experience, though.

ETA: I am probably an OK coordinator but as a public communicator I will probably have a bit of a weird voice, but if SC would think that this is the preferred solution to the jigsaw given the pieces they find on the table, I am fine being that robotic voice, too. Very easy to be better than me at that, though!

Hello nix community. I follow the process of improvement in the governance of this project with much interest and I think it is on a good way. Thanks for your work and as a simple, not much contributing (so far) community member, I think these people are all a good fit for the EC. I wish them all good luck for the job.
