Gnome randomly crashes when connected to usb-c monintor/hub

I get random crashes (about the same rate on 24.05 as 23.11) when I connect my laptop to my monitor which has a built in usb-c hub. It crashes like 1 in 30 times.

I got some logs during the crash

Has anybody experience the same thing and does anyone have any good ideas to troubleshoot further?

Are you able to test with a different usb-c hub or usb-c to hdmi adapter?
Try also to boot with the hub already plugged in (and not plug it in after device has started).

Some “cheap” and low quality adapters / hub tends to crash or simply won’t work.
Some would also work, but would crash when opening specific sites or apps.

As an example, I used to have “low quality one” (few bucks), worked fine on Windows and Linux but as soon as running some media apps (Netflix, Apple Music, etc), it would freeze the display and crash on both OS’s.

I ended buying a bit more pricey one (Belkin) and never had any issues since then, bought a 2nd one (different model) and worked fine as well.

I never investigated enough to figure whether it was an hardware problem or software.
e.g:

  • Wayland vs X11
  • HDMI incompatibility from monitor or hub
  • low quality / faulty hub
  • wrong / incompatible CODECS
  • drivers
