How to add a nixpkgs PR into your nixOS config manually?

I want to add the following PR into my NixOS configuration:

brave: fix vulkan support

I currently just call brave normally. as one would call any package

The thread linked below is about (roughly) the same topic. I think my answer (using applyPatches) would be the easiest approach in this case.

Another option is the applyPatches function of nixpkgs: Nixpkgs/Patching Nixpkgs - NixOS Wiki It saves you the trouble of figuring out the right override invocation (just give it the upgrade PR as patch), at the cost of writing another nixpkgs tree to the store. (And longer eval time.)
