London Nix User Group

I’d like to do a talk on four things at once, it should be around 30 mins. The talk will go over four things I’m working on at the moment

  1. Mobile NixOS
  2. Nix-Telemetry (see who’s using your flakes)
  3. Rust based Nix backends
  4. Nixified.ai

@matthewcroughan that’s great!

Reminder this is on tonight and to sign up via Eventbrite if you’re coming London Nix User Group Tickets, Tue 6 Jun 2023 at 18:00 | Eventbrite.

We have some good (informal) talks lined up and we can do more ad-hoc ones as time allows. See you tonight!

@graham33 and team, thank you for a great event. I really enjoyed the talks and meeting new people!

Thanks everyone who arranged the event and the presenters! May I ask, are we going to update this thread for subsequent events?

Hi everyone,

After a bit of a summer hiatus, I’ve finally scheduled the next event for early September (Wednesday 6th): London Nix User Group Tickets, Wed 6 Sep 2023 at 18:00 | Eventbrite, the week before NixCon!

We have at least one presentation planned already, let me know if you’re interested in presenting.

Reminder that the London user group is on tomorrow, please sign up on the Eventbrite (link above) if you plan on coming.

We’ll have an exciting presentation from PDT Partners announcing a new open source project which blends the Nix and containers/Kubernetes ecosystems. Don’t miss it!

Here are the details on the project we presented: Nix-snapshotter: Native understanding of Nix packages for containerd

I am so gutted I didn’t make it this time. I’ve been waiting for something like this to get implemented since I first started working with nix and kubernetes around 5 years ago. I am surprised you haven’t mentioned it during the first meetup. I guess I must make it to the next one!

Thanks for organising the event and hosting us @graham33 and team. It was great meeting the London nix community as a newbie

Congratulations and thanks to the team on open-sourcing the project!

Reminder this is tomorrow! If anyone has any talk ideas let me know - I recently had a PR merged to Nixpkgs for a NixOS module, so absent any other ideas I thought it might be interesting to walk people through the process.

I’m attending tomorrow! I’m quite new to Nix and I would really appreciate to see how experienced people use it. For example:

  • (stealing your idea): How to package an application. Mainly gotchats, arcane error messages, etc.
  • Good approaches to configure local shell environment (using vanilla Nix, Jetpack or devenv).
  • How to manage a fleet of servers running NixOS.
  • Containerise an application (and how to avoid duplication between the container & shell environment config).

That sounds like a great topic, I’m happy to lead the discussion and we can hopefully have the group chime in with tips and advice.

Hi all

Looking to come to the next meetup and am booked for the Jan 2024 one, but I just wondered if there was anything in December at all

We’re doing them every two months, so next one’s in January. Of course, if someone else wants to organise one in December too that’s more than welcome!

Fair comment, I guess it wouldn’t be in London though if I did that

Just for the avoidance of doubt, we had another London user group meeting last night as per Eventbrite. There was some confusion about the date, but we’ll treat Eventbrite as canonical (even though I suspect it has a bug in its date logic!)

We had a good turnout for early January, thanks everyone for coming. The next one will be 6th March.

Reminder the next user group meeting is tomorrow. If you have any topics you want to speak about or ask the group about, feel free to let me know in advance (or ad-hoc on the day is fine).

I’ll be joining late due to another commitment, but some of my Nix-using colleagues will be hosting.
