I am in the market for a 2 in 1 form factor (I had one from work and grew to appreciate it to double as my tablet).
But if I pick one up, I do not want to mess around with hardware support. The Lenovos seem a good option, but I wanted to narrow it down a little on revisions and generations.
Happy owner of a not-in-production-anymore 2022 IdeaPad Duet 3i 10.
Pro: very portable (10.3" 866gr), fanless
Con: keyboard
Used to be my work laptop, combined with a usb-c hub for hdmi out and bluetooth keyboard and mouse. These days it tags along in my bag as a spare laptop.
I don’t have a recommendation, unfortunately, but based on past experiences with a variety of models, and observing that their models share a variety of frustrating hardware bugs that have been known but unfixed for at least a decade (e.g. failures and “quirks” regarding their USB ports), I would steer anyone away from Lenovo laptops.
Although this is less of a NixOS question and more of a Linux question, i.e. presumably you want in-kernel tree support for your hardware.
I would also steer clear from non-Thinkpad Lenovo but otherwise big Lenovo fan here.
The Ideapad is my only non-Thinkpad. I have only experienced one hardware bug that was resolved with a new motherboard.
A 2009 X301 was my first Lenovo, following up a 2004 IBM X40. I’ve had eight Thinkpads in total, of which a 2014 S1 Yoga is still in use by my daughter.
My T14s gen 6 snapdragon is the first Lenovo with poor Linux support, but still ahead of snapdragons from competition.
I had a yoga I was using and had no issues (from work), but it was one year ago, and I wanted to get something newer and see what others were using. I think I will also look at the community hardware repo.
if you don’t care about touch screen, have you considered a regular laptop + a small (A5 or so) drawing tablet (i.e. no screen, only pen input) for better ergonomics, not blocking the view of the screen with your hand and still having access to the keyboard while being able to input with the pen?
this way you don’t have to compromise on laptop specs for the 2 in 1 part.
small wireless drawings tablets can be had second hand for < 50€.
i like the feel of these tablets way better than the glass of 2 in 1s too and it won’t make the screen dirty with your handprints.
