New Announcement Subcategories: Tool Annoucements, Writeup

Could we get a “New Tool”, “Tool Update”, “Personal Writeup” and “Official Writeup” subcategories for annoucments?

Edit: removed “official writeup” since it could be considered an extra burden on maintainers.

Examples:

  • Transforming global software with …(Personal Writeup)
  • Optix (New Tool)
  • Reclaim 130Gb in Github Runners (Personal Writeup)
  • Thymis: Web Based Dashboard (New Tool)
  • 2025 S3 Sponsorship (Official Writeup)
  • Devenv 1.8 … (Tool Update)
  • App Shell (New Tool)
  • Nixfmt 1.0 (Tool Update)

I don’t care about the names, it just feels natural to fit (and filter) by those 4 groups.

I mainly want to see what new tools are being released. If 4 categories is too many, just New Tool would be a win in my book.

Great idea, I’d also appreciate more fine-grained topics to follow or post to.

I’d also love to see this, this could also encourage more update posts since we won’t feel like we’re taking away attention from new tools.

I like the separation between official and non-official writeups; that makes it easier at a glance to see how my own infra would be affected.

@jtojnar It looks like people support this idea of additional subcategories, but we need help creating them, could you help here? Thanks for all your maintainance work!

@hexa I know things have been busy, so no worries about delays. This is a small/quick change, it is reversible and unlikely to cause problems even if not reversed. (Adding 3 sub-tags “New tool” “Tool Update” and “Personal Writeup”)

If you’re able to make that change, we would greatly appricate it. Thanks again for your work!

Just a friendly check in back on this @hexa (Adding 3 sub-tags “New tool” “Tool Update” and “Personal Writeup” to the announcement category). I’m kind of waiting for the tags so I can make an announcement.
