Nix@NGI Monthly Team Update - June

June was a big month at NGI@Nix. We welcomed fresh energy, extra hands, and shipped a bunch of projects. Here’s your quick behind-the-scenes look at what’s been happening.

Extra Forces, Extra Velocity

Thanks to the fantastic support from our Summer of Nix participants: @Prince213, @ethancedwards, and @junestepp, and our first-ever Outreachy intern @themadbit, our team grew by almost 30% this summer!

That growth translated into faster packaging, quicker reviews, and long-awaited projects finally moving forward. Huge kudos to @eljamm, @julienmalka and @erictapen for stepping up to mentor, plan, and guide this growing crew.

Highlights from the Summer of Nix & Outreachy team:

@Prince213 shipped:

  • OpenWebCalendar [#785]
  • NodeBB [#1094]
  • Draupnir [#1068]
  • And is in the final stretch of Ethersync [#612]

@themadbit packaged:

@themadbit, our Outreachy intern (mentored by @eljamm), has been on fire, diving into:

  • NGIpkgs module system and overview internals
  • Packaging across different ecosystems (Python, Rust, etc.)
  • Documenting his journey in blog posts

Speaking of which, don’t miss Mark’s latest post.

Weekly Demos = Weekly Wins

As projects hit milestones, we’ve kicked off weekly demo sessions during our Friday syncs. This is a new tradition that adds a well-deserved “yeah, we did that!” energy to close out the week :green_heart:

Also worth celebrating: @OPNA2608 closed Blink [#1259], a privacy-first video conferencing tool, and Inventaire [#1078], a book sharing service — try running a demo on your machine. She also added the galene-stream plugin.

It’s not all green checkmarks, we’re also tackling difficult questions like [#1254] and [#1269]. These open discussions are key to shaping long-term sustainability.

Ops + Maintenance

@imincik keeps the broader project on track, for example by introducing a milestone view, and helps the team dealing with the growing complexity and shifting priorities within the project. @eljamm further refined our task management process, which results in a neat overview of projects in progress. He also contributed a series of UI improvements and under-the-hood cleanups to ngi.nixos.org. @erethon continues to support infra and jumps in across coordination gaps when needed, while @fricklerhandwerk and @wamirez take care of logistics in the background.
