Hello everyone,

The process of planning office hours turned out to be quite a lot for me, and I ended up scuttling the idea for a bit. But, it is on! We’re going to do the first one tomorrow at 3:00 PM America/New_York (1900 UTC – 24hrs from now.)

Experimentally, it will be:

  • on Zoom (video optional)
  • recorded and published
  • 45min long
  • topics and format TBD, but casual

wrt Zoom: I know it is unfree, and this may make some people not want to participate. However, it is the most reliable video conferencing tool I have used so far. Again, this is experimental, so we could switch down the road. However, this is what we’re going to do for now.

Zoom can be fetched via nix-shell -p zoom-us.

I have setup the meeting to not automatically turn on video or audio.

Anybody is welcome, of course. I’m not sure what the format will be – I’ll be doing some research in to this tonight. Tomorrow will be casual.

Also, Zoom can be joined with chromium, after clicking through a few
links and popups it ends up giving you a direct access to the video as a
WebUI, so you don’t have to run code outside the browser sandbox.

Yes there was an issue with the recording. We’ll do better the next time around!

I was having problems with the Zoom browser client distorting sound and the desktop one not working properly with a tiling WM so I hacked something up using Xephyr.

@grahamc says it also solves sharing under sway for him :slight_smile:

This is cool! Means it’s possible to watch with free software like mpv.

I wonder if you would consider an IRC channel for people to be able to
participate without joining the call?

Yes! Thank you, we already have #nixos-officehours on Freenode. We had it last time, but due to some funny circumstance didn’t announce it.

If this is a regular thing as planned I don’t think you should continue using this thread
to have to continually announce things.

Perhaps there could be a matrix for events https://github.com/NixOS/events.
I believe that’s something we touched on, albeit I no longer have any involvement with this.

That site is wrong :frowning: The site says 4pm - 5pm in for both my timezone and the office hours timezone (which happen to be the same timezone) when it should be 3pm - 4pm (well 3:45pm).

I hope that site isn’t misleading people.
