NixOS 26.05 released

Hey everyone, we are @yayayayaka and @jopejoe1, the release managers of the newest release of NixOS. We are very proud to announce the public availability of NixOS 26.05 (the Linux distribution) and Nixpkgs 26.05 (the package set) under the codename “Yarara”.

This release will receive bugfixes and security updates for seven months (up until 2026-12-31).

The old release 25.11 “Xantusia” is now officially deprecated and will reach its end-of-life and stop receiving security updates after 2026-06-30.

This release was made possible due to the efforts of 2842 contributors, who authored 59703 commits since the previous release.

We would also like to thank our release editors @NotAShelf and @bjth for working on the release notes. And also a special thanks to @Sigmanificient for designing the release logo!

There will we a release restrospective on 2026-06-03T18:00:00Z on Jitsi. The room link will be posted here and on the release management matrix room shortly before the start of the meeting.

Enjoy the new release! :tada:

So much:

has been removed, as it was unmaintained within nixpkgs.

Very nice to see some cleanup, though I wonder if there could simply be a section for removals in the future to make the more subtle backwards incompatibilities a bit easier to read.

Thank you to everyone involved in this release!

The release notes say:

systemd.network.* has been updated to support all configuration options from upstream networkd version 259.

I believe this should be version 260.

This version of networkd also includes a new integration with modemmanager to connect to mobile networks (see option systemd.network.networks.<name>.mobileNetworkConfig), though some related modemmanager module updates haven’t made it into 26.05. I probably should have added this to the release notes - sorry!

I imagine a chase patch to the release notes post-release isn’t frowned upon? It’ll still help users who upgrade later.
