Any sufficiently useful technology will be used for scams, especially regarding communication. It happens every time: Fax, telephone, email, even physical package delivery… And of course, scams are much easier to build than actually useful solutions, and hence dominate the space. There are a lot of well-meaning people who truly believe in blockchain as a vehicle for freedom, especially techno-anarchists rooted in the philosophy that brought us free software itself.
