This is really cool! In my project I have demo flakes like this one for Immich that start a Qemu VM. The goal is to let the user try a service and get a feel for it without committing to installing it on their server.

It would be immensely cool if I could leverage trynix to let users start a VM completely in the cloud.

One issue is the user needs to get ssh access to the VM. Do you think it’s possible?

Very possible;
You can replace the qemu-wasm with a proxy to a firecracker VM; that is unauthenticated.
You give them a lifetime lease of < 1hr and then tear it down.

I explored this and I think it has a lot of merit, I just didn’t want to run the service right now, so I thought the local browser only solution was fun to pursue.

Another option would just be to start a GUI in the VM directly and then have it auto start a browser. That makes it a browser in a browser… Makes me think of a well known meme dawg :sweat_smile:

you mention performance issues with larger binaries there.
would you know what’s causing that / what the bottleneck is, so we could reason about what might help address it?

Probably the fact that it’s a JS VM, running an x86 VM, running the binary. So for starters the biggest bottleneck, and one that’s not really feasible to work around, is the fact that you’re emulating an x86 system in software.

I can see in the future a wasi target being used instead, that’d definitely make things better, but the current architecture is the biggest problem I’d say.

Yes I thought maybe the wasm would be OK due to JIT but it’s just so much emulation :smiling_face_with_tear:
