Set a default device for the scanner?

I am using simple-scanner, which relies on sane, and every time I open simple-scanner it searches for a long time until it finds the only existing device, which is my Brother printer MFC-L2710DW
Can I set this printer as the default scanner, or somehow speed up the search?

If you can identify which backend is slow, you can disable it with hardware.sane.disabledDefaultBackends

To identify the slow backend, one possibility is to run

SANE_DEBUG_DLL=128 scanimage -L

it’s quite spammy.

The output is basically everything in /etc/sane-config/ which is a pretty long list. I want the whole list to be skipped. Brother is not even on the list.
This ostensibly doesn’t sound like a NixOS issue, but really it is, because on a standard distro, you can just delete entries straight from /etc/sane-config/.

Is there a way to wildcard it? I mean, instead of putting dozens of backends between the brackets, can I put a * or something?

it’s not documented but in the end it’s used in sed so I suppose .* works.
