It’s interesting that they’re offering employment. Wondering if that’d mean employment at the ministry of economic affairs. Being a employed by the state working on open source maintainership sounds kinda cool. Also kinda curious where in the TVöD it would fall.

All in all sounds like a good initiative. My main question would also be if they’d support part time for people already being employed.

Edit: turns out I just need to learn to read

To account for this, the fellowship pilot ideally should accommodate the broad range of situations and needs by offering different types of work agreements, numbers of hours, and lengths of engagement. This is especially important in order to make participation possible for maintainers who don’t have the financial security; professional or social capital; or personal flexibility to participate in a more standardized program. This will help increase the diversity among the maintainers: in fact, 20% of the participants identified as part of a marginalized group

The applications are now open until 2024-10-20:

Residents of Germany can apply for a full-time (32-40h/w) employment. Everyone else can apply for contracting (6-32h/w).

You must be a maintainer of at least three open source projects, one of which you are applying for as a paid maintainer.

@imincik yes that would also be relevant for Nixpkgs maintainers.
