Hi all,
I’ve been having some constant troubles with where out of nowhere, such as when playing a game or with just steam open, I get a popup that says "New controller firmware update for your Sony ’ ’ ". And steam automatically starts to shutdown to update this so-called Sony controller, even though I have none. After that popup, even if I choose “ignore” or “later”, it doesn’t really change anything, steams just gets stuck rebooting.
Anyone else have this problem? I dont even have a Sony anything, the most I got is a 8bitdo controller. It makes no sense for me.
I will some screenshots when it happens
I have been experiencing this issue for a couple of months.
In my case it always seems to occur after steam showed a toast notification like $USER is playing $GAME. What I think is happening is during the time the notification is visible, steam receives input events meant for the game and promptly freaks out. From that point on, the popups keep appearing, even when the game is closed.
It would be helpful to know which DE/WM/compositor you are running to determine whether we are experiencing the same issue. I am using Hyprland.
I am using Hyprland as well
I just started getting this too, nixos-unstable, hyprland - built a new PC yesterday so I’ve not had an opportunity to play steam games for a few days, figured this was due to my new hardware but perhaps not…
I am not seeing any notifications (I’ve got most of them turned off) for me this happens almost as soon as I start steam.
well well well. looks like my steam has caught the flu as well.
i am using hyprland (flake) (!) too:
New Controller Firmware Available
There is new firmware available for Sony for your [object Object]
Update Ignore Later
appears in the middle of the game. no buttons seem to do anything.
immediately as well as:
Shutting down Steam…
Exit Now Cancel
i am on a steam deck. i DONT have anything sony related in the slightest.

apparently, steam’s built-in notifications are breaking things. oh well!
perhaps try one of:
- disable
"Sign in to friends when Steam Client starts" - disable
"Notification pop-ups" - disable
"Steam Overlay while in-game"
one can also start in Offline Mode if you cant get into steam without it shutting down
