Steering Committee update

On the Steering Committee we’re trying to give occasional updates on what we have been and will be working on so you all are not in the dark as to what is going on.

The two biggest issues we’re trying to tackle are the most time-sensitive ones:

  • Replacing Equinix infrastructure

Equinix has been supporting our infrastructure for building Nixpkgs pull requests, but that’s ending at the end of this year. We can’t simply find another source of funding to continue using Equinix as a host because they are actually shutting down Equinix Metal so we need to find a new hosting provider no matter what. We have a few promising sponsors that we believe will be able to replace the Equinix sponsorship, although there will likely still be a gap in between when Equinix drops its sponsorship and the new sponsorships begin. We will bridge the gap by renting infrastructure (which will be paid for by the NixOS foundation).

  • Nominating and approving new board members for the NixOS Foundation

The NixOS board has been operating as a skeleton crew consisting of literally just one person (Ron Efroni). We’ve been working with Ron to get out a call for new members with a detailed breakdown of the roles and responsibilities that we’re looking for.

Once we publish that call for board members the formal process for confirming new members of the board is that the existing board (Ron) nominates new board members and the Steering Committee must approve each new member by majority vote.

Besides that, we also wanted to give you all some idea of what’s going on, so here is a quick summary of some Steering Committee members have been working on:

  • @Ericson2314

John’s been working on contacting other sponsors to replace the Equinix sponsorship

  • @Gabriella439

Gabby’s been focusing a lot on improving our “meta” processes, including improving transparency with the community (like this post), streamlining internal comms/workflows, and improving documentation/discoverability around NixOS ecosystem teams and processes.

  • @jtojnar

Jan is going to be working with our Moderation Team to see how the Steering Committee can better assist them.

  • @tomberek

    • Nixpkgs security tracker hosting budget
    • Set up a process and tracker for partnerships. Follow-up with ongoing engagements.
  • @winter

Winter has been working on board rotation planning (see above) with Ron.
