Whonix KVM - "no storage vol with matching name"

I’m re-posting this from a Whonix Discourse forum post I made about 3 weeks ago. It feels like it’s more relevant to NixOS and the way it stores files, so I’m not sure that the people on Whonix would be able to help.

When I’m launching either the Whonix Gateway or Workstation virtual machine from the Virtual Machine Manager GUI on NixOS 26.05 I get the following error:

Error starting domain: Storage volume not found: no storage vol with matching name ‘Whonix-Gateway.qcow2’

I’ve configured libvirtd on NixOS with some settings that allow Virtual Machine Manager to run on NixOS:

  virtualisation.libvirtd.enable = true;
  programs.virt-manager.enable = true;

This is in Home Manager, an abstraction over the XDG configuration directories:

  # To make virt-manager work on Wayland, it needs to have its own cursor defined.
  # See https://wiki.nixos.org/wiki/Virt-manager#Wayland.
  home.pointerCursor = {
    gtk.enable = true;
    package = pkgs.vanilla-dmz;
    name = "Vanilla-DMZ";
  };

My user account has also been added to the libvirtd and kvm groups.

I’ve decompressed the qcow2 images and copied them to ~/.local/share/images:

cp --sparse=always Whonix-Gateway*.qcow2 ~/.local/share/images/Whonix-Gateway.qcow2

cp --sparse=always Whonix-Workstation*.qcow2 ~/.local/share/images/Whonix-Workstation.qcow2

I’ve also tried this by copying the images to /var/lib/libvirt/images/.
