Why are there no LTS releases of NixOS?

Do we maybe want a LTS release? What are the points for it or against it?

There are many packages where upstream support cycle is slightly annoying at half-a-year release cycle, and would need a ton of work to support on a longer one. Given that many people don’t even care about 6-monthly releases now, whoever wants LTS will have to hire people to do the maintenance…

There has already been a thread discussing this: Interest in a NixOS LTS?
They mentioned many points already:

  • How do we then decide when to backport?
  • Backporting some changes is not trivial
  • Do we have enough manpower and are we organized enough?
