Xrandr: Configure crtc 0 failed

Since an update at the begin of march, i receive an error when i am trying to adjust the resolution of the built-in monitor of my Laptop (Tuxedo infinity book 14)
The expected behaviour is that the resolution will be set to 1920x1200 (in this case)
Here is the output of xrandr

and the error after the command xrandr --output eDP-1 --mode 1920x1200

xrandr: Configure crtc 0 failed

As an additional note, using --auto works perfectly well

in case it helps here is the systems Metadata

  • system: "x86_64-linux"
  • host os: Linux 6.1.21, NixOS, 23.05 (Stoat), 23.05pre467130.a64e169e396
  • multi-user?: yes
  • sandbox: yes
  • version: nix-env (Nix) 2.13.3
  • channels(root): "nixos"
  • nixpkgs: /nix/var/nix/profiles/per-user/root/channels/nixos

figured out what the problem was: somehow i was missing the xorg-driver from intel

adding

services.xserver.videoDrivers = [ "intel" ];

solved the issue

The official recommendation is to use the modesetting driver instead of intel.

i tried it and the issue returned

the solution i found has a minor inconvenience as i recently found out
xinit refuses to run the xrandr command, it works though after the window manager started
