Hi everyone,
We are glad to announce that we are participating in Google Summer of Code 2026!
Our goal is to provide students and open source newcomers with an opportunity to fast-track participation in our projects and the wider open source community.
This means we are looking for mentors, participants and the community’s feedback on projects!
Mentoring
As a GSoC mentor you are expected to take a few hours every week to meet and chat with your potential mentee. This will probably be more time at the start and should progressively get less over the northern-hemisphere summer. In those meetings you will introduce the mentee to our community and help them work on a pre-defined project. Project proposals can be adjusted in the repo until the application period startin March 16th.
We require that mentors
- can speak English fluently (i.e. language is not much of a barrier)
- are at least 18 years of age
Besides doing good for the mentee and the project, I’ve heard it looks great on your resume ;), and you can receive a $500 USD stipend for this work through Stichting NixOS Foundation.
Projects
We have adopted past proposals for this year, but we would very much appreciate your input on the projects.
If you have extra info or other ideas, consider opening a pull request to GSoC/ideas/2026.md at f3091f7cad24f71e680b7e119bddcf37b43564a3 · NixOS/GSoC · GitHub
How do I participate?
A great starting point is our GSoC repo which has more information and instructions.
You can also ask questions
- in public: gsoc:nixos.org matrix room, under this post, or in a GitHub issue
- in private: with a Discourse private message, or directly to me on matrix,
@roberthensing:matrix.org.
Let’s have a great summer of code!
Cheers,
Robert Hensing
