Here’s another update with the most significant updates after the previous one. I wish I could make these more regularly, but alas time is limited!
- @ra33it0 with the hardware team established a partnership with NovaCustom enabling an option to ship their laptops with NixOS! Also check out the new NixOS devices page.
- Also @ra33it0 with the hardware team published a blog post about the results of the partnership with Framework, check out the post about it!
- @ra33it0 with the Hardware team have established a partnership to OpenWRT who sent an OpenWRT One to @magicrb to improve NixOS support.
- ra33it0 with the Hardware team also established a partnership to deepcomputing to improve NixOS support on RiscV devices, a device has been sent to @rosscomputerguy
- After @tomberek prompted it, @infinisil and @roberth worked to apply the NixOS Foundation to Google Summer of Code (GSoC) 2026, ending up getting accepted! The board is now funding @roberth to be the lead GSoC org admin. Read more in Call for Mentors and Participants GSoC 2026.
- Thanks to the continued Nix enthusiasm and coordination by NLNet, we’re participating in their accepted Restack grant proposal. This is the continuation of the NGI0 grant programs and will be used to sustain the Nix@NGI with another ~€100k.
- In related news, @imincik took over from @fricklerhandwerk to lead the Nix@NGI team. @infinisil has established weekly calls with @imincik to go over the any legal/financial needs that come up, such as contract renewal and EU reporting.
- Prompted by @imincik, @ra33it0 submitted feedback to the European Commission’s call for feedback about the importance of open source.
- After establishing the general sponsorship tiers, we’re happy to say that the Technology Innovation Institute has become the first €10k sponsor!
- Since last time we’ve funded over 20 events in Switzerland, Norway, USA, Germany, Poland, China, Austria, Belgium, Finland and Spain through our event funding program! Since last time we’ve made some adjustments to the process to incorporate more reporting and adjust funding limits.
- FOSDEM deserves special attention. @katexochen did a great job organising the booth and shirts, while @ra33it0 helped facilitate in-person donations to the NixOS Foundation. On the ground, @mschwaig, @magicrb, @avocadoom and @bjth helped answering questions and presenting Nix to attendees throughout the event.
- @infinisil has drafted a more structured approach for accepting donations at events.
- Furthermore, we’re happy to be funding OceanSprint again this year, as well as the new AuroraSprint, which was attended by both @lassulus and @ra33it0.
- Old news, but NixCon 2025 happened! While some board members also helped out in personal capacity, a lot of work was done on behalf of the foundation:
- @infinisil and @ra33it0 managed sponsorships according to the established process, and ensured that all sponsors get what they were promised.
- @infinisil @ra33it0 did most of the budgeting and accounting. Thanks to our generous sponsors and ticket sales allowed to pay for 5 full meals and snacks for all ~450 attendees, a lovely venue space, stipends for a number of people and various other perks!
- Preparing for and participating in the State of the Union (primarily @ron!) and the Steering Committee & Foundation Board Panel segments.
- @infinisil has been working non-stop to catch up and improve on our accounting while ensuring that VAT and corporate tax reporting gets done properly and in time.
- In particular we had to submit the 2024 corporate tax report before the end of 2025, which required some crunch time.
- @infinisil onboarded @ra33it0 to eHerkenning/Reconi, to increase the bus factor for people that can submit reports to the Dutch authorities.
- Meanwhile @lassulus makes sure that everything gets paid properly and in time.
- @ron reestablished our contact with GitHub and connected the Nixpkgs Core team with them to get better support, most recently resulting in getting fully sponsored GitHub Enterprise!
- In light of the moderation turmoil around the last SC election, we provided the SC with a budget to help the situation, part of which was used to get some help by a professional.
- @avocadoom is regularly getting funding to do some work on the website with direction from @ra33it0, resulting in a new governance page among other improvements.
- We’ve now also opened a smaller experimental funding stream for @sigmanificient to work on design.
- @hsjobeki and @friedow have reached out with a proposal to revive the documentation team with continued crowd-funding from OpenCollective, which @infinisil and @roberth (from the SC side) are following up on.
- @lassulus is in discussions about taking over part of the nix-community project, since it’s looking for a new financial host.
- @infinisil is continuing his secretary duties of managing the foundation inboxes, setting the meeting agenda, leading the meetings and taking notes, and writing these updates!
- We’ve established a small partnership with OtaNix, a finnish student organisation, with @infinisil keeping in touch.
- @ron will be representing the NixOS Foundation in a State of the Union at PlanetNix in a couple days!
- @infinisil and @ra33it0 are regularly pairing to make some progress on a proposal to fill gaps in the foundation’s funding model. Beside everything else going on this doesn’t have the highest priority, but stay tuned!
- We’re receiving many requests about what is acceptable legal usage for the NixOS names/logos. @ryantrinkle is working on establishing some framework for handling these.
- We’ve effectively offboarded @edolstra off all foundation-related registrations and accounts.
- @Ericson2314 was appointed to take on management of the STF grants.
