Did NixOS logo's colours changed?

The logo on the main page is now have rainbow colors. I thought it was for the pride month but it’s still same, did they permanently changed it?

Hey @cyanforce, why do you ask? KR

People here decided to celebrate it year-round.
However the changes is only limited to just a few places but not the other, like this discourse and github.
I don’t know why people keep missing changes on those big platforms. Maybe some human mistakes?
It would be great to share the pride to everywhere we could and let the idea reach to the most people possible.

Genuinely- What can be done about NixOS being the constant target of grifters on twitter? The logo changed, now there’s a tweet with thousands of likes about it. Never ending blog posts about anything this forum does. It’s crazy

Is this discussion really necessary? As a straight person, the [however temporary] logo change has yet to affect me in even the tiniest way. I really don’t see why someone might be prompted to discuss this other than “We changed our logos for pride month to signal our inclusivity in case it wasn’t already apparent.”

The change make noise, that means we are on the right track.

If it only affect people in just the tiniest way and cannot change their mind, I think it is just not enough.

The stand is clear:

  • We are proud.
  • We are grateful.
  • And we stand with our LGBTQ+ friends, colleagues, and contributors - those who lead, build, support, and inspire every day.

We need to spread the idea to the community.

So I have no idea why the rainbow still haven’t land on the Github nixpkgs repo README.md, as well as the github account logo. Github is actually the place where every nix contributors are around.

The colors of the official logomark are still the light/dark blue version as described in the branding guide. We in Marketing Team changed the logo on the homepage at the beginning of pride month. However, we did not want to change it back immediately at the end of pride month. We will change it back when we want.

I also urge anybody interested in discussing non-technical issues like these to reach out to the respective team directly (in this case the marketing team). And if you think they’re doing a bad job, you can escalate to the Steering Committee. And if you think the SC is also doing a bad job, you can cast your vote accordingly in the next SC election. And if you’re not eligible to vote, start contributing to be eligible next time

…which is kinda hilarious considering how a common theme around people being unhappy about things like rainbow logos is that they want to focus on the tech :face_with_hand_over_mouth:

The new logos have not appeared in README files and other official places because they are not hosted anywhere. I am working with the Infrastructure team to make that happen. Once they are hosted, you’ll likely see updates.

I believe the purpose of this document in the org repository is to explicitly define which teams maintain and/or have authority over which repositories. The Marketing Team owns (relevant to this discussion) nixos-homepage, (relevant to this discussion) branding, and surveys. While it hasn’t been explicitly written anywhere, I have had several discussions with members of the SC and Foundation about the autonomy that the Marketing Team has. The feeling that I get is that, unless the circumstance is dire, the Marketing Team has the autonomy to maintain those repositories as we see fit and to perform our duties as necessary. And I believe Infinisil’s comment reinforces that feeling.

And I believe this is a good process. If you want to enact change, request changes from the appropriate team (or make sufficient contributions such that you can join the team). If you don’t believe the team is fulfilling their duties, escalate it to the SC. What I really appreciate about this process is that it encourages long tearm contributions and involvement over one-off contributions or decision by popular vote. I believe this is the start of good governance that this project needed for some time.

To be clear, I have never argued against the Marketing Team’s autonomy, I’ve explicitly supported it in my last comment.

The issue is accountability: if the team committed to changing the logo for one month, then that commitment should be honored. Saying now that you can “do whatever you want” undermines both the commitment and the trust that autonomy relies on.

Autonomy isn’t a blank check. It comes with the responsibility to follow through on commitments, be transparent, and maintain the community’s trust. If the governance model allows teams to ignore their own stated plans without consequence, then we need to be honest about what “autonomy” really means in this context.

Otherwise, what stops someone from deciding tomorrow to start posting Dogecoin memes under the official NixOS branding simply because they “have the autonomy” to do so?

Are you really slippery slope fallacy-ing about the colours of a logo? Way too much ink has Already been spilt about this!!

Don’t turn this into a ANOTHER NixOS Drama. It’s really not that big of a deal!

The implication that this is what is happening on the marketing team is, quite frankly, unfounded trash, and you should be ashamed to write such a thing here.

I get that to some people this might feel minor, but my point isn’t about the specific colors — it’s about governance, commitments, and accountability.

If we can’t follow through on something as simple as a temporary logo change we publicly committed to, it raises bigger questions about how autonomy and responsibility are balanced in other, more impactful decisions.

I’m not looking to create drama — I’m trying to have a constructive conversation about how we ensure trust in the processes we’ve agreed to. The real drama would be if someone got banned simply for raising these kinds of governance concerns.
