Nix Friday - streaming about Nix every Friday

Thanks for the feedback <3. Please PM me with brutal feedback, I also want to hear everything that is bad so that I can improve. My ego can take it

Today we had zero questions in the chat, which leads me to believe that the new format is more geared towards offline consumption. Like a podcast. There are two more episodes lined-up and I will then decide what to do next.

I hope I will be able to watch live next week again. But today was not possible, a co worker left the company today and our team went out for a last beer together.

I know that I was sleeping through the interview. Maybe it would be worthwhile for people to post questions before the interview, so that people have more avenues to ask questions.

I know for the IPFS interview, I probably would have asked, “I have the fortune of having excess storage and compute, whats a good way to share the build outputs from reviewing PRs (specifically from staging branch) with others?”

I’ve been enjoying them as podcast format; in fact having an audio only link would be A+
(I’m a father with two kids – so I’m doing podcast style more out of necessity :joy:)

I am also all for making a podcast out of it. The video does not add much here. It might be still ok for the people talking with each other.

I’m down if it doesn’t add too much work. Do you know of any good podcast publishing software that I can use?

Looking at popular Linux podcasts like Linux Unplugged, they all seem to be using hosted solutions that cost ~20USD/month given the current usage.

I’m also interested in the podcast format.

I currently use a NixOS module in charge of downloading the video from
the youtube RSS feed, re-encoding it to mp3 to finally expose it via a
HTTP server together with a podcast feed. It’s pretty raw as it is, but
it works for me.

I currently hide these under a HTTP auth since I host quite a few other
personal feeds on the machine.

Providing a public Nix Friday podcast feed w/ thumbnail is definitely on
my todo list. I’m up to host that on my infra as a starter. We can then
come up with a CDN-based one if it ends up needed.

If you’re ok with that of course!

Thanks for the offer, that sounds great!

I’d recommend https://transistor.fm as it handles all the hard work for a few beers per month

Maybe as a workaround the following could also help:

  • NixOS: mpv --video=no 'https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kVPq2RS5RJ0'
    • Might also require youtube-dl if mpv doesn’t prefix $PATH
    • For other players youtube-dl can be used as standalone tool to download the audio only
  • Android: NewPipe from F-Droid can play the audio stream in the background (also without downloading the video)

I wonder if Cloudflare could help with podcast hosting.

Thanks for all the recommendations <3

Here it today’s recording with Rickard where we talk about nixbuild.net.

Next Friday, I want to go back to the roots and do an interactive session about Flakes. Go over what it is, how to get started and convert an existing repo to it.
